Innovative Integrated Tools and Technologies to Protect and Treat Drinking Water from Disinfection Byproducts (DBPs)

A meeting of all members of the international consortium implementing the project "Innovative Integrated Tools and Technologies to Protect and Treat Drinking Water from Disinfection Byproducts (DBPs)",AKRONIM: H2OforAll was held on November 21, 2023 at the University of Gdansk Library. The project is funded under the Horizon Europe program.


During the meeting, attended by about 40 people, discussions were held on the progress of research work carried out in the various tasks of the project. The participants were welcomed by the Vice-Rector for Cooperation and Development of the UG, Prof. Sylwia Mrozowska, PhD, and the Project Coordinator on behalf of the UG, Prof. Adriana Zaleska-Medynska, PhD. The meeting was chaired by Project Leader Prof. Rui Martins from the University of Coimbra in Portugal. The first presentation was made by Andreas Kamilaris from the Cyens Center of Excellence, presenting the sensors developed during the project to monitor disinfection by-products (DBPs).

 

Daniela Meilmann of DHVMED then presented the identified risks of DBPs' impact on drinking water quality and the environment. After a break, Luisa Duraes from the University of Coimbra discussed the progress in developing alternative water disinfection technologies that could be applied to the removal of DBPs. The next speaker was Rafael Laurenti from the IVL institute from Sweden, who presented an economic and environmental assessment of the sustainability of DBPs removal technologies. In the last part of the meeting, Siemen Burssens from the University of Leeds presented a research report on the awareness and involvement of citizens in the prevention of water pollution as well as good practices affecting behavioral changes in household activities that can improve this condition.

The meeting also discussed the financial aspects of project implementation, ways to disseminate the results of the project, and presented the previous involvement of consortium representatives in clusters dealing with water and water pollution in the European Union.
